Homemade rolls are a great alternative to store-bought snacks from a sushi restaurant. Despite such a complex spicy taste and beautiful appearance, the rolls can be prepared at home, you just need to have the necessary ingredients. Of course, it is best to take sushi rice, but if this is not available, it can be replaced with short-grain rice. It is only important to prepare it correctly so that it is viscous and has a good delicate consistency.
It is impossible to prepare sushi without dried seaweed - nori, in which, in fact, rice and avocado will be wrapped to make such thin rolls. The avocado fruit for the filling should be ripe, soft, with a characteristic creamy-buttery taste, then the rolls will turn out especially tasty. And for spiciness, you can add a little wasabi to the rolls, and then they will be perfect. This recipe with photos of avocado rolls at home is very simple, and the sushi turns out delicious. I think you'll like this one too.

How to cook with photos step by step

To prepare rolls, first of all you need to prepare the base - rice. Therefore, we rinse the rice well several times, let it swell in water, then place it in a saucepan with a thick bottom, fill it with water (400 ml) and cook until tender over low heat. Then leave the rice covered for 20 minutes until it is completely steamed.

Heat the rice vinegar over low heat, add salt and sugar to it, and as soon as the dressing has cooled, pour it into the rice and knead it thoroughly.

We peel the avocado fruit, cut it in half and remove the pit, then cut it into long longitudinal slices.

We put cling film on the mat (I skip this step) and start preparing the rolls.
First, place a sheet of nori (smooth side up), then put a little rice on it (2-3 tbsp) and distribute it so that it does not reach 1.5 cm from the edge of the nori. Flatten it with hands dipped in water.

Apply a strip of wasabi to the rice (using your fingers dipped in the seasoning),

and place avocado slices on top of it.

Carefully roll up the roll

pressing him with his hands.

Then we cut into portions, decorate and serve.

Bon appetit!

There are thousands of recipes and guides for making rolls on the Russian Internet, so we decided to do our bit and post a short review of making rolls at home. Plus, you can appreciate the benefits of making rolls at home rather than purchasing them.

Cost of ingredients for rolls.

Let's start with the most interesting thing: how much will it cost us to collect all the necessary ingredients to make rolls at home. If you are making rolls at home for the first time, the cost will obviously be higher, since you will have to buy additional necessary components and cooking tools. For example, you will have to buy a mat on which tubes from sheets of nori will be rolled out in the future. You will also have to buy soy sauce and wasabi if you want everything to be no worse than the product ordered. However, this is a justified expense: the mat can be used many times, just like wasabi, most likely you won’t be able to eat it at one time (it all depends on the volume of the tube).

I will try to list the products, tools that we will need to make rolls with trout, cucumber, avocado and cheese, as well as their cost. At the time of writing, the value of the dollar was about 32 rubles.

The cost of cucumbers is 20 rubles (40 rubles per kilogram), the cost of avocados is 30 rubles (60 rubles per kilogram).

Rice vinegar cost 60 rubles, but it should last for a long time.

Ten sheets of nori cost 100 rubles, which is probably one of the most expensive ingredients when making rolls.

The cost of fish is 150 rubles. Fish is the main component of rolls, so the tastier the fish, the better the rolls.

A mat can be purchased for 100 rubles. Professional, large mats cost about 500 rubles or more, but an ordinary small, amateur mat is suitable for us, which is actually no worse, except that you can’t make many rolls on it at one time.

The cost of the purchased cheese did not exceed 60 rubles. Buy the cheese you like best. I think you shouldn’t buy smoked cheese, although with the right ratio of ingredients, rolls with smoked cheese can turn out quite tasty.

The rice used was the most common, short-grain rice for 35 rubles/kg. It seems that the rice that is sold specifically for rolls is just a marketing ploy. The same can be written on sunflower oil: “lactose-free” or on tomatoes: “no cucumbers”. Regarding the fact that regular short-grain rice doesn’t stick, it’s nonsense, “you just don’t know how to cook it,” this is not the first time we’ve used this kind of rice normally and without any problems. We also bought soy sauce (30 rubles) and wasabi (80 rubles). Without buying these ingredients, you will deprive yourself of at least 30% of the pleasure of eating rolls, so do not spare money on them.

Preparing products for rolls.

It's time to get down to business. Let's start by cooking the rice. The rice should look like porridge after cooking, but not fall apart, so keep an eye on it as it cooks. Don't forget to add salt. Add a spoonful of sushi rice vinegar and stir. This simple procedure should not cause any difficulties.

The rice is ready to be put into rolls, so now we move on to cutting the remaining products. We cut everything into long slices, so that the thickness is not very large and approximately the same. By the way, you don’t have to use avocados here at all, it won’t make things worse. Considering that avocado tastes a little like the chlorophyll-free stems of horsetail, popularly called “pistils”, “pestushki” and “pestki” :), then having avocado in rolls may not be necessary. In fact, everything here is limited by your imagination.

We cut the cheese into long longitudinal pieces. Don’t go overboard with the thickness, otherwise you won’t feel anything except cheese and fish.

Cutting an avocado and cucumber is nothing more than repeating the operation with cheese. Make the thickness exactly the same as for cheese slices.

We cut fish. Everything is simple here: you should have a pile of red worms on the table :)

We make rolls with trout, cheese, cucumber and avocado with our own hands.

In fact, the title of this paragraph, namely the phrase “with your own hands,” sounds rather stupid, but this is done so that the likelihood of you visiting this page is higher. And all because we ourselves search in search engines for phrases such as “with our own hands”, “at home”, “on our own”, etc., but this was a lyrical digression. After all the necessary products are cut, you can begin the most interesting part - making rolls. This is where we need a mat.

Place a sheet of dried seaweed nori on the mat. I associate the smell of this product with the sea, probably because the sea smells exactly the same, in general it brings back pleasant memories despite the specific aroma.

Spread the rice over the sheet in a thin layer. Don't make a thick layer, otherwise you can just eat it while snacking on cheese and fish. We leave one edge without rice, otherwise the whole roll will unwind and you won’t get any rolls. We apply everything lengthwise as in the photo, so that we get an even and beautiful layer. Now you can roll the resulting food into a tube.

Carefully roll the sheet of nori into a roll, while folding the mat into an accordion so that it does not interfere with the further process. As a result, you should end up with a composition like this.

Some people think that only big originals and exotic lovers make rolls. There is also an opinion that rolls are boring and monotonous. But it seems to me that this is completely wrong: the taste of the dish changes depending on the filling that is used to prepare them, the main thing is that it is combined with the taste of rice. By the way, rolls can even be sweet if you make the rice sweeter and use fruit fillings.

Today I suggest making rolls with cucumber and avocado. This recipe is suitable for vegetarians and those watching their weight as it is low in calories. In addition, it will help diversify the Lenten table for those who adhere to it.

Ingredients for cucumber and avocado rolls

  • sheets of nori (red algae);
  • special rice for rolls and sushi (I do not recommend using regular rice);
  • wasabi (Japanese spicy seasoning);
  • soy sauce;
  • pickled ginger;
  • rice vinegar;
  • cucumber;
  • avocado.

Recipe for homemade cucumber and avocado rolls

1) First, cook the rice. Why I don’t recommend using regular rice: it contains a small amount of gluten, and the rice itself turns out watery. As a result, it does not stick well to the nori sheet, and then, wrapped in nori, it saturates the seaweed itself with excess liquid so much that the rolls simply fall apart.
Wash the rice thoroughly, add water in a ratio of 1:1.5 and place on low heat under the lid for 20-25 minutes. Then turn off the rice, season with rice vinegar (for 400 grams of rice, about 100 grams of rice vinegar) and let it cool. (photo 2).

2) While the rice is cooking, you can take care of preparing the filling. In this type of roll, it is simple, but this does not spoil the taste of the roll. Cut the cucumber and avocado into thin strips. Don't forget to peel the avocado. (photo 3, 4).

3) It is most convenient to roll the rolls on a bamboo mat, which can be replaced with a mat made of wooden sticks. Place the sheet of nori on the mat, shiny side down. (photo 5).

4) When preparing rolls, you must follow the rules of sanitation by keeping a bowl of water acidified with vinegar nearby for these purposes, in which you must constantly wash your hands when you form the rolls to ensure their cleanliness.
5) Take a handful of rice and level it over the surface of the nori. The upper part should not be filled; it will serve as a so-called “lock” for the roll. (photo 6).

6) If desired (if you like spicier food), you can lightly coat the rice with wasabi. (photo 7).

7) Now place the filling and wrap the roll tightly. (photo 8, 9).
